Sodium Aminosalicylate
About Sodium Aminosalicylate
Sodium Aminosalicylate is used to treat tuberculosis (TB). Tuberculosis is an infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis, primarily affecting the lungs, but it can also spread to other parts of the body, including the kidneys, brain, spine, and bone marrow. Sodium Aminosalicylate is ineffective for treating colds, flu, or other viral infections.
Sodium Aminosalicylate contains sodium aminosalicylate. It works by exerting its bacteriostatic effect against Mycobacterium tuberculosis by competing with PABA for enzymes involved in folate synthesis, thereby suppressing the growth and reproduction of the bacteria, ultimately leading to cell death.
You are advised to take Sodium Aminosalicylate for as long as your doctor has prescribed it for you, depending on your medical condition. Sometimes, you may experience common side effects like diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, and abdominal pain. Most of these symptoms resolve gradually on their own over time. However, consult the doctor if any of these symptoms persist or worsen.
Do not take Sodium Aminosalicylate if you are pregnant or breastfeeding as it may cause potential risk to the foetus and may pass into breast milk. Avoid driving or operating machinery until you know how Sodium Aminosalicylate affects you. Sodium Aminosalicylate is safe for children if prescribed by the doctor. Avoid alcohol consumption and smoking during treatment with Sodium Aminosalicylate as it may cause unpleasant side effects. Inform your doctor about your health condition and medicines to rule out any side effects/interactions.
