Mosapride

About Mosapride

Mosapride contains a class of medicines known as 'gastrointestinal agents,' primarily used to treat gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (reflux of gastric contents into the oesophagus). Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a condition that occurs when stomach acid frequently flows back into the food pipe (oesophagus). This backflow (acid reflux) irritates the food pipe and causes heartburn.

Mosapride contains Mosapride, primarily used to treat GERD (gastro-oesophageal reflux disease). It works by increasing the release of certain chemicals (acetylcholine), which helps improve food movement inside the intestine. Thus, gastric emptying of both liquid and solid from the intestine is increased.

Take Mosapride as prescribed. Depending on your medical condition, you are advised to take Mosapride for as long as your doctor has prescribed it for you. In some cases, you may experience certain common side effects such as dizziness, headache, nausea, diarrhoea, dry mouth, abdominal pain, headache, insomnia (difficulty sleeping), unusual tiredness and weakness. Most of these side effects do not require medical attention and will resolve gradually over time. However, you are advised to talk to your doctor if you experience these side effects persistently.

Inform your doctor before taking Mosapride if you have a stomach or intestine tumour, liver or kidney disease, or intestinal bleeding. Do not take Mosapride if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Mosapride may cause dizziness and sleepiness, so drive only if you are alert. Mosapride should not be given to children as safety has not been established. Avoid consuming alcohol and grapefruit juice along with Mosapride as it could lead to increased drowsiness and can elevate stomach acid production. Keep your doctor informed about your health condition and medicines to rule out any side effects.

    Patients Concern

    Disease/Condition Glossary

Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD): The stomach is usually protected from acid by a mucous layer. In some cases, the mucous layer gets eroded due to excess acid production, which leads to complications like acidity, GERD, heartburn, peptic ulcer, and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) is a condition that occurs when stomach acid frequently flows back into the food pipe (oesophagus). This backflow (acid reflux) irritates the food pipe and causes heartburn.

    FAQs

Mosapride is used to treat GERD/gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (reflux of gastric contents into the oesophagus).

Mosapride contains a class of medicines known as 'gastrointestinal agents,' containing Mosapride, that works by increasing the release of certain chemicals (acetylcholine), which helps to improve the movement of food inside the intestine. Thus, there is increased gastric emptying of both liquid and solid from the intestine.

Avoid or limit the consumption of alcohol while taking Mosapride as it may lead to increased dizziness. Alcohol intake leads to increased production of stomach acid, thereby increases acidity and heartburn.

Diarrhea might be a side-effect of Mosapride. Drink lots of fluids and eat food rich in fiber if you experience diarrhea. If you find blood in stools (tarry stools) or if you experience excess diarrhea consult your doctor. Prolonged intake of Mosapride is linked with a greater risk of Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea, so if you develop diarrhea that does not improve, immediately consult a doctor.

Dry mouth could be a side-effect of Mosapride. Limiting caffeine intake, avoiding smoking and mouthwashes containing alcohol, drinking water regularly, and chewing sugar-free gum/candy might help in stimulating saliva and thereby prevents drying of the mouth.

Talk to your doctor if you do not feel better even after taking Mosapride for 14 days. Do not take Mosapride for longer durations unless prescribed by the doctor. If Mosapride is prescribed for longer durations, a regular check-up is advised.

The common side effects of Mosapride include dizziness, headache, nausea, diarrhoea, dry mouth, abdominal pain, headache, insomnia (difficulty sleeping), unusual tiredness, and weakness. Most of these side effects do not require medical attention and will resolve gradually over time. However, if the side effects persist, please consult your doctor.

Take Mosapride as directed by your doctor, at the same time each day. Swallow Mosapride as a whole with water, without crushing, breaking, or chewing it.

Please consult your doctor before stopping Mosapride, even if your symptoms are relieved or you start feeling better. Stopping the medication early may lead to a relapse of the disease.

To prevent the symptoms of GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease), try to avoid large or fatty meals and instead eat smaller, more frequent meals throughout the day. Avoid lying down immediately after eating to help prevent acid reflux. Limit foods that trigger your symptoms, such as spicy, acidic, or fried foods, and reduce your intake of alcohol and caffeine. Maintaining a healthy weight, quitting smoking, and wearing loose-fitting clothes can also be helpful. Additionally, elevating the head of your bed may reduce night-time reflux.
