Altop DSR Tablet belongs to a group of medicines called gastrointestinal agents used to treat acidity, heartburn, gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GERD), Zollinger-Ellison syndrome, nausea, vomiting, the fullness of stomach, bloating, gas, helicobacter pylori infection, gastric and duodenal ulcers. Acidity occurs when the gastric glands produce more stomach acid required for digestion.
Altop DSR Tablet is a combination of two drugs: Rabeprazole sodium (proton pump inhibitor) and Domperidone (a dopamine antagonist). Rabeprazole sodium works by blocking the action of an enzyme called gastric proton pump, which is responsible for the production of acid. Domperidone works by increasing the movements and contractions of the stomach muscle. Together, Altop DSR Tablet helps in treating acidity-related problems.
Take Altop DSR Tablet 30-60minutes prior to food. Depending on your medical condition, you are advised to take Altop DSR Tablet for as long as your doctor has prescribed it for you. Sometimes, you may experience common side effects such as dry mouth, stomach pain, diarrhoea, headache, and flatulence. Most of these side effects do not require medical attention and will resolve gradually over time. However, you are advised to talk to your doctor if you experience these side effects persistently.
Inform your doctor before taking Altop DSR Tablet if you have a history of gastrointestinal bleeding or intestinal obstruction. Talk to your doctor before taking Altop DSR Tablet if you have osteoporosis as Altop DSR Tablet may increase the risk of bone fractures on long-term treatment. Consult your doctor before taking Altop DSR Tablet if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Altop DSR Tablet may cause dizziness, so drive only if you are alert. Altop DSR Tablet should not be given to children as safety has not been established. Keep your doctor informed about your health condition and medicines to rule out any side effects.

Do not take Altop DSR Tablet if you are allergic to any of its contents; if you are taking atazanavir (used to treat HIV); if you have galactose intolerance, lactase deficiency, glucose-galactose malabsorption, electrolyte disturbance, heart failure, or gastrointestinal haemorrhage. Inform your doctor before taking Altop DSR Tablet if you have stomach tumour, kidney, heart or liver disease, or if you are due to have Chromogranin A blood test. On long-term treatment, Altop DSR Tablet may cause low magnesium levels, and vitamin B12 levels, and increase the risk of bone fractures; the doctor may advise regular tests for monitoring your condition. Consult your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Prolonged intake of Altop DSR Tablet is linked with a greater risk of Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhoea, so if you develop diarrhoea that persists or worsens, immediately consult a doctor.
Drug-Drug Interactions: Altop DSR Tablet may have interaction with anti-HIV (atazanavir, nelfinavir, saquinavir), blood thinner (clopidogrel, warfarin), a drug used to treat hypothyroidism (levothyroxine), anti-rheumatoid (methotrexate), anti-depressant (duloxetine), vitamin (cyanocobalamin), cardiac glycoside (digoxin).
Drug-Food Interactions: Altop DSR Tablet may interact with St.John’s wort (herbal supplement used to treat depression). Avoid alcohol consumption as alcohol intake increases stomach acid production, thereby increasing acidity and heartburn.
Drug-Disease Interactions: Inform your doctor if you have/had epilepsy, mania, Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhoea (CDAD), liver disease, bone fractures, and hypomagnesemia (low levels of magnesium).
Acidity: The stomach is usually protected from acid by a mucous layer. In some cases, the mucous layer gets eroded due to excess acid production, which leads to complications like GERD, heartburn, peptic/gastric ulcers and Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) occurs when stomach acid frequently flows back into the food pipe (oesophagus). This backflow (acid reflux) irritates the food pipe and causes heartburn. Symptoms include heartburn, a sour or bitter taste, and difficulty swallowing. Gastric ulcers are sores that develop on the stomach and intestine lining due to erosion of the stomach's protective lining. Symptoms include nausea, changes in appetite, bloody or dark stools, unexplained weight loss, vomiting, and indigestion. Zollinger-Ellison syndrome is characterised by the formation of tumours in the upper part of the small intestine, which leads to excess acid production. Symptoms include bloating, burping, weight loss, loss of appetite, nausea, and vomiting.
