Oolac Tablet belongs to the class of medicines called ‘antidiarrheal’ used to treat diarrhea that occurs due to infections. Diarrhea is a condition in which bowel movements are too frequent, leading to loose and watery stools. In general, infection of the digestive tract is the common cause of diarrhea. Different types of bacteria can cause infection.
Oolac Tablet contains Ofloxacin, Ornidazole, and Lactobacillus. Ofloxacin is a quinolone antibiotic and inhibits DNA gyrase required for the replication, transcription, and repair of the DNA of the bacteria. Ornidazole inhibits protein synthesis and leads to cell death, thereby kills the bacteria. Lactobacillus restores the good bacteria in the gut, which is destroyed by the antibiotic. Together, Oolac Tablet helps in treating bacterial infections.
You should take this medicine exactly as prescribed by the doctor. The common side-effects of Oolac Tablet are nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, bloating, dizziness, headache, and photosensitivity (skin sensitivity to the sun). These side-effects are usually mild and temporary. However, if any of these side-effects persist or get worse, inform your doctor immediately.
It is recommended not to take Oolac Tablet if you are allergic to any contents of it. Oolac Tablet should not be used in patients with fits, history of inflammation or swelling of the tendons in the wrist or Achilles tendon with quinolone antibiotics such as ciprofloxacin, norfloxacin, and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency (an inherited disorder that affects red blood cells). Do not discontinue or abruptly stop the medication as it may lead to antibiotic resistance, a condition in which bacteria become resistant to antibiotics. It is not recommended for children and adolescents under 18 years, pregnant women, and breastfeeding mothers. It should be used with caution in elderly people.
Oolac Tablet is used to treat diarrhea caused by infection of the digestive tract. It can effectively control bowel movements, treat infection, and prevent the recurrence of symptoms. It is usually prescribed along with fluid and electrolyte therapy. It is also advised to take plenty of fluids to prevent dehydration.
Before taking Oolac Tablet , inform your doctor if you have epilepsy, low potassium levels, nervous or muscle problems, head injury or brain tumor, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, heart, kidney, or liver problems. Oolac Tablet may increase muscle weakness, so it should be used with caution in patients with myasthenia gravis. If your eyesight is impaired or you notice any vision changes, inform your doctor immediately. Oolac Tablet may increase skin sensitivity to the sun, avoid sunlamps, tanning beds, and prolonged exposure to sunlight while using this medicine. If you notice tingling sensation or numbness in the hands and feet, pain, tenderness, or restricted movement of the tendons, stop taking this medicine and inform your doctor immediately.
