Setuvir Cream belongs to the class of 'antivirals' that is generally used to treat recurrent herpes labialis (cold sores) in immunocompetent adults and adolescents aged 12 and up. Recurrent herpes simplex labialis, often known as oral herpes, is a disorder caused by the herpes simplex virus that affects the lips. It's a common and contagious illness that spreads quickly.
Setuvir Cream contains acyclovir, it exerts antiviral activity against herpes simplex viruses (HSV) by interfering with DNA synthesis and limiting viral replication.
Setuvir Cream is solely for the topical treatment of recurrent HSV lesions on the lips and face. It should be used as prescribed by your doctor. Dry lips, desquamation (scale off or peel off), dryness of skin, cracked lips, scorching skin, pruritus, flakiness of skin, and stinging on the skin were the most prevalent adverse effects to Setuvir Cream at the site of topical administration. These side effects may not occur in every patient who takes this drug and will fade over time. Please notify your doctor if the side effects last longer or worsen.
Setuvir Cream is restricted for use in people who are sensitive to acyclovir, valacyclovir or any component of the formulation. Setuvir Cream should not be applied on mucous membranes including in the eye or inside the mouth or nose. The effect of Setuvir Cream has not been established in immunocompromised patients. Before using Setuvir Cream, consult your doctor if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding. Setuvir Cream is recommended not for use in children below 12 years.
Setuvir Cream treats viral infections caused by the herpes simplex and varicella-zoster viruses. It consists of Acyclovir, an antiviral drug. It works by killing and stopping the growth of the virus. Setuvir Cream effectively treats herpes simplex encephalitis (brain inflammation by herpes simplex virus) and neonatal herpes simplex virus infection. Setuvir Cream is also useful in preventing the reactivation of the cytomegalovirus infection in seropositive (showing a positive result of a blood test for a particular antibody) patients following bone marrow transplantation.
