About Lomotil Tablet

Lomotil Tablet belongs to the group of medicines called antidiarrheal used to treat diarrhoea. Diarrhoea is a condition characterized by loose and watery stools with a frequent need to have a bowel movement. Symptoms include nausea, abdominal pain, cramps, bloating, dehydration, watery loose stools, and frequent urge to evacuate the bowels.

Lomotil Tablet is a combination of two drugs: Diphenoxylate (opioid agonist) and Atropine (anti-cholinergic). Diphenoxylate works by slowing down the intestinal movements, thereby makes the stools more solid and less frequent. Atropine helps to prevent involuntary muscle movements in the intestine. Atropine is added to prevent the abuse of diphenoxylate as higher doses may cause physical dependence.

You are advised to take Lomotil Tablet for as long as your doctor has prescribed it for you, depending on your medical condition. In some cases, you may experience certain common side-effects such as abdominal discomfort, nausea, vomiting, headache, dry mouth and dizziness. Most of these side-effects do not require medical attention and will resolve gradually over time. However, you are advised to talk to your doctor if you experience these side-effects persistently.

What if I have taken an overdose of Lomotil Tablet

Do not take more than the prescribed dose of Lomotil Tablet as it may cause overdose leading to breathing problems and may result in permanent brain damage. The symptoms of early overdose include blurred vision, weakness, slurred speech, fast heartbeat, fainting, slow breathing, feeling hot, seizure or coma. If you suspect you have taken overdose or notice signs of overdose, please consult a doctor immediately.

Dry mouth could be a side-effect of Lomotil Tablet . Limiting caffeine intake, avoiding smoking and mouthwashes containing alcohol, drinking water regularly, and chewing sugar-free gum/candy might stimulate saliva and prevent drying of the mouth.
Constipation might be a side-effect of Lomotil Tablet . Drink enough fluids and eat fibre-rich food if you experience constipation. Consult your doctor if the condition persists or worsens.
