Kofkil Syrup

Kofkil Syrup belongs to a class of respiratory medications called 'expectorant' primarily used to treat cough. Coughing (dry or productive) is the body's way of clearing irritants (like allergens, mucus or smoke) from the airways. There are two types of coughs, namely: Dry cough and chesty cough. A dry cough is tickly and doesn't produce thick mucus, while a chesty cough (wet cough) produces mucous or sputum that helps clear the airways.

Kofkil Syrup consists of four medicines, namely: Bromohexine (mucolytic), Terbutaline (bronchodilator), Ammonium chloride (irritant/expectorant) and Menthol (cooling agent). Bromhexine makes sputum less viscous and makes it easier to cough out. Terbutaline works by dilating (expanding) and relaxing the air passages in the lungs, making breathing easier, especially in people with airway problems or respiratory obstructive disorders. Ammonium chloride is an expectorant that decreases the stickiness of mucous and helps remove it from the airways. Menthol is an organic compound that produces a cooling sensation and relieves throat irritation.

Kofkil Syrup is available in oral syrup and suspension. The most common side effects of Kofkil Syrup are nausea, diarrhoea, bloating, indigestion, vomiting, stomach upset, sweating, dizziness, headache and skin rash. Most of these side effects of Kofkil Syrup do not require medical attention and gradually resolve over time. However, if the side effects are persistent, reach out to your doctor.

Let your doctor know if you have any allergic reactions to Kofkil Syrup or any other medication. Brief your medical history to the doctor if you have any heart, liver, kidney, lung diseases, depression and Parkinson's disease before taking Kofkil Syrup. Kofkil Syrup can cause sleepiness; hence avoid taking alcohol while using Kofkil Syrup. Kofkil Syrup may affect your ability to drive. It is advised not to drive whilst taking this medicine. Check with your doctor if you are pregnant, currently breastfeeding or taking any other prescribed or non-prescribed drugs.

If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, it is advised to inform your doctor before using Kofkil Syrup. If you are suffering from fits (epilepsy/seizures) or have a history of fits, please inform your doctor before taking Kofkil Syrup as it may increase the risk of recurrent fits. Kofkil Syrup is not recommended for children below 6 years of age and body weight less than 25 kg, as the safety and effectiveness were not established. If you have diabetes, regular monitoring of blood sugar levels is recommended while taking Kofkil Syrup. If you experience constipation, leg cramps, numbness or tingling, increased urination or thirst, muscle weakness or irregular heartbeats, contact your doctor, as it may be due to low potassium levels in the blood. Drink plenty of fluids while taking Kofkil Syrup to loosen mucus. If you have diabetes, fits, high blood pressure, overactive thyroid or heart problems, please inform your doctor before taking Kofkil Syrup.

• Take the medication as directed by the doctor and at regular intervals. Do not use other over the counter medications, herbal or vitamin supplements without informing your pharmacist or doctor when you take Kofkil Syrup.
• Know your triggers like allergens, such as pollen, dust and food items that make your asthma and other respiratory diseases severe.
• Quit smoking and avoid passive smoking. Smoking also reduces the effectiveness of the medicine.
• Drink extra fluids while you take Kofkil Syrup to help loosen congestion and lubricate the throat.
• Eat a healthy diet and exercise regularly to strengthen your breathing muscles and boost your immune system.
• Learning breathing exercises will help you move more air in and out of your lungs.
