Coftos Syrup is used to provide relief from cough. Coughing (dry or productive) is a body's way of clearing irritants (like allergens, mucus, or smoke) from airways thereby preventing respiratory infection. Cough is commonly caused as a response to allergy or viral infection but coughing up mucus is possibly an indication of infection in the respiratory tract.
Coftos Syrup is a combination of three drugs, namely: Ammonium chloride (expectorant), Chlorpheniramine maleate (antihistamine), and Sodium citrate (mucolytic). Ammonium chloride helps loosen the congestion in the chest and throat by decreasing airway secretion's stickiness. Chlorpheniramine maleate works by blocking a chemical substance called histamine, which is responsible for causing allergic reactions. Sodium citrate loosens and thins the phlegm, making it easier to cough out. Together, Coftos Syrup provides relief from cough.
You are advised to take Coftos Syrup for as long as your doctor has prescribed it for you depending on your medical condition. Coftos Syrup may cause certain common side-effects such as headache, dizziness, nausea, fatigue, and dry mouth in some cases. Most of these side effects do not require medical attention and will resolve gradually over time. However, you are advised to talk to your doctor if you experience these side effects persistently.
Do not take Coftos Syrup if you are pregnant or breastfeeding unless prescribed. Coftos Syrup may cause dizziness, so drive only if you are alert. Coftos Syrup is not recommended for children below 6years. Avoid consuming alcohol along with Coftos Syrup as it could lead to increased dizziness. Keep your doctor informed about your health condition and the medicines you are taking to rule out any side effects/interactions.

Cough: Coughing is a body's way of clearing irritants (like allergens, mucus, or smoke) from airways and preventing infection. Cough can be dry or productive. A productive cough (wet cough) develops sputum (phlegm or mucus) from the lungs, whereas a dry cough does not produce sputum. Cough is commonly caused as a response to allergy or viral infection but coughing up mucus is possibly an indication of infection in the respiratory tract. If you are coughing out thick, solid white mucus, it indicates that you may have a bacterial infection in the airways. Clear or light-coloured mucus indicates allergies or minor infection in the respiratory tract, and a yellow or green mucus indicates a respiratory infection.
