Papayas and pineapples have been linked to miscarriages, therefore, many women avoid having them. But is it true? If yes, then what should one be cautious about? Read on to know if these fruits are safe during pregnancy.
Papaya in Pregnancy: What Happens When You Eat Papaya?
If you are pregnant or trying to become pregnant, avoid eating unripe papaya. Unripe papaya contains a latex substance that may cause contractions in the uterus. Papaya also contains enzymes like papain that are often recommended for treating digestive problems. Papain is the key ingredient found in the unripe papaya’s latex and leaves.
Unripe papaya’s latex may act like prostaglandin and oxytocin, which are produced naturally by the body during labour. Moreover, studies reveal that papain can also weaken the membranes surrounding the uterus (chorion & amnion), thereby inducing early labour.
Therefore, it is often advised to avoid the consumption of unripe or semi-ripe papaya in any form. However, one can have a bowl of ripe papayas after consulting their healthcare providers.
Pineapples in Pregnancy: What Happens When You Eat pineapples?
Pineapple is safe to eat during pregnancy. Furthermore, pineapple is a rich source of folate, which is important for the proper development of the baby’s spine. However, it contains an enzyme called bromelain, which can cause contractions similar to labour pains.
Therefore, avoid excess consumption of pineapple fruit or juice to avoid the risk altogether. You can also consult your gynaecologist to know the amount of pineapple that is safe for you to eat during the gestational period.
