Nalidixic Acid

About Nalidixic Acid

Nalidixic Acid is used to treat urinary tract infections (UTIs) caused by bacteria. Urinary tract infection is the most common infection in humans caused by microbes. It can occur in any part of the urinary tract, such as the bladder, urethra, kidneys, or ureters.

Nalidixic Acid contains Nalixic acid, an antibiotic that works by inhibiting the action of DNA gyrase (a bacterial enzyme), which is essential for repairing and replicating bacteria's genetic material (DNA). Thus, it prevents the reproduction and repair of bacteria. Thus, it kills bacteria and clears the infection.

Take Nalidixic Acid as prescribed by your doctor. You are advised to take Nalidixic Acid for as long as your doctor has prescribed it for you based on your medical condition. Sometimes, you may experience diarrhoea, dizziness, headache, nausea, or stomach pain. Most of these side effects of Nalidixic Acid do not require medical attention and gradually resolve over time. However, if the side effects persist or worsen, please consult your doctor.

Please tell your doctor if you are allergic to Nalidixic Acid or any other medicines. If you are pregnant or planning for pregnancy, please inform your doctor before taking Nalidixic Acid. Avoid taking Nalidixic Acid if you are breastfeeding as it may be excreted in breastmilk and harm the baby. You are recommended to complete the full course of Nalidixic Acid as your doctor prescribes for effective results. You are advised to maintain a time gap of 2 hours between taking Nalidixic Acid and mineral supplements, vitamins with minerals or iron, sucralfate, didanosine, or antacids containing magnesium, calcium, and aluminium.

Uses of Nalidixic Acid

Nalidixic Acid is used to treat urinary tract infections.

Medicinal Benefits

Nalidixic Acid contains Nalidixic acid, which is a broad-spectrum antibiotic that acts against both gram-positive bacteria and gram-negative bacteria. It is mainly active against gram-negative bacteria such as E-coli, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Enterobacter species, Proteus mirabilis, Proteus vulgaris, Providencia rettgeri and Morganella morganii. Nalidixic Acid inhibits DNA gyrase (bacterial enzyme) action that is essential for repairing and replicating the genetic material (DNA) of bacteria. Thereby prevents reproduction and repair of bacteria. Thus, kills bacteria and clears the infection.

    Diet & Lifestyle Advise

    • Avoid alcohol, soda, coffee, tea, and artificial sweeteners, as they may cause bladder irritation.

Taking probiotics after antibiotic treatment can reduce the risk of antibiotic-associated diarrhoea. Certain fermented foods like cheese, yoghurt, kombucha, sauerkraut, and kimchi can restore the good bacteria of the intestine.
    • Include fibre-rich foods, which can be easily digested by your gut bacteria and help stimulate their growth. Thus, fibre-rich foods may help restore healthy gut bacteria after a course of antibiotics. Whole grains such as brown rice and whole-grain bread should be included in your diet.

    Special Advise

    • If Nalidixic Acid is continued for more than 2 weeks, blood tests are recommended to monitor blood counts and kidney and liver function periodically.
