Disease/Condition Glossary

Organ rejection: Organ rejection occurs when the body’s immune system treats the new organ as a foreign object and attacks it. Immunosuppressant medicines are indicated to prevent and treat organ rejection.

Asthma: It is a chronic (long-term) respiratory condition in which airways narrow, swell, and produce extra mucus, leading to difficulty in breathing. The asthma symptoms include wheezing (whistling sound while breathing), shortness of breath, chest tightness and cough, especially at night.

Nephrotic syndrome: It is a kidney disorder in which the body excretes too much protein in the urine. This causes oedema (swelling), often in the face and legs. Although oedema is painless, sometimes it may be uncomfortable or cause breathlessness and high blood pressure.

Inflammation: It is a part of the body’s defence mechanism by which the immune system recognises and facilitates the removal of harmful stimuli and begins the healing process.
