Ambroxol+levofloxacin
About Ambroxol+levofloxacin
Ambroxol+levofloxacin belongs to a class of drugs called 'respiratory stimulants' (cough/sputum thinner) primarily used to treat acute (short term) and chronic (long term) respiratory diseases associated with excess mucus. Acute respiratory diseases are initially associated with dry, irritating cough, hoarseness in laryngitis (swelling of the voice box), or burning sensation in the chest due to bronchitis (swelling of the lining of bronchial tubes). Then, wet mucus forms, and continuous coughing out of sputum occurs. In chronic respiratory diseases, dry irritating cough and wet cough with mucus occur.
Ambroxol+levofloxacin consists of two medicines: Ambroxol (dilutes viscous cough) and Levofloxacin (antibiotic). Ambroxol is a mucolytic that thins and loosens mucus (phlegm), making it easier to cough. Levofloxacin comes into the category of antibiotic medicines that stop bacterial growth by inhibiting the two enzymes (bacterial topoisomerase IV and DNA gyrase) required for bacterial cell growth. As a result, bacterial cells are not able to reproduce and grow. It is a bacteriostatic antibiotic, i.e., it stops bacteria's growth but does not necessarily kill them. The addition of ambroxol enhances the antibacterial effect of levofloxacin.
Ambroxol+levofloxacin should be taken as advised by your doctor. Take Ambroxol+levofloxacin with/without food and swallow whole with a glass of water. Do not crush, chew, or break it. Some people may experience common side effects like nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, dizziness, insomnia (difficulty sleeping), and allergic reactions. Most of these side effects of Ambroxol+levofloxacin do not require medical attention and gradually resolve over time. If you experience any allergic reaction (rashes, itching, swelling, shortness of breath, etc.), you must seek immediate medical help.
Before taking this Ambroxol+levofloxacin, you should tell your doctor if you are taking any medicines other than Ambroxol+levofloxacin. Before taking Ambroxol+levofloxacin, inform your doctor if you have liver and kidney diseases. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, consult your doctor before taking Ambroxol+levofloxacin. Ambroxol+levofloxacin should be used with caution in gastric ulcer patients, epilepsy, and muscle disorders. Avoid drinking alcohol as it can cause excessive drowsiness with this Ambroxol+levofloxacin.

Patients Concern
Disease/Condition Glossary
Asthma: It is a breathing problem in which airways narrow, swell, and produce extra mucus (cough), leading to difficulty breathing.
Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD): It is a group of lung diseases with emphysema (shortness of breath) and chronic bronchitis (inflammation of the lining of your bronchial tubes). Symptoms include frequent coughing, excess sputum, shortness of breath, and trouble taking a deep breath.
Pneumonia: Pneumonia is an infection that inflames air sacs in one or both lungs, which may fill with fluid or pus. Symptoms include chest pain when you breathe or cough, confusion, cough (which may produce phlegm), fatigue, fever, sweating and shaking, chills, nausea, vomiting or diarrhea, and shortness of breath.
Bronchiectasis: It is a condition where the bronchial tubes of your lungs are permanently damaged, widened, and thickened. These damaged air passages allow bacteria and mucus to build up and pool in your lungs. This results in frequent infections and blockages of the airways. Symptoms include coughing up yellow or green mucus daily, shortness of breath, fatigue, fever, and wheezing (whistling sound while you breathe).
