Spenzo Depot 20 Injection 1 ml belongs to a class of medications called antipsychotics used to treat schizophrenia (a mental illness) and other psychotic disorders. Schizophrenia is a mental disorder that affects the ability of a person to feel, think and behave clearly.

Spenzo Depot 20 Injection 1 ml contains Flupentixol which works by inhibiting the dopamine (chemical messenger) receptors in the brain. Dopamine is involved in regulating mood, behaviour, and emotions. Thereby, Spenzo Depot 20 Injection 1 ml helps in controlling psychotic illness by preventing the overactivity of dopamine in the brain. Thus, it helps in improving feelings, disturbing thoughts, and behaviour.

Spenzo Depot 20 Injection 1 ml will be administered by a healthcare professional; do not self-administer. Some people may experience dry mouth, drowsiness, rigidity of the whole body, muscle spasms, headache, changes in weight, dizziness, insomnia (difficulty in sleeping), nervousness, or depression. Most of these side effects of Spenzo Depot 20 Injection 1 ml do not require medical attention and gradually resolve over time. However, if the side effects persist or worsen, please consult your doctor. 

Please tell your doctor if you are allergic to Flupentixol or other medicines. Spenzo Depot 20 Injection 1 ml is not recommended for children and adolescents. Spenzo Depot 20 Injection 1 ml should be used with caution in elderly patients above 65 years as there is an increased risk of adverse reactions. Using Spenzo Depot 20 Injection 1 ml in the third trimester may cause adverse effects in the baby, such as breathing problems, muscle stiffness or weakness, shaking, etc. Spenzo Depot 20 Injection 1 ml may be excreted in human milk. Therefore, if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, inform your doctor before taking Spenzo Depot 20 Injection 1 ml. Do not consume alcohol with Spenzo Depot 20 Injection 1 ml as it may increase drowsiness. Drive only if you are alert, as Spenzo Depot 20 Injection 1 ml may cause dizziness, blurred vision, or drowsiness.

Drug-Drug Interaction: Spenzo Depot 20 Injection 1 ml may interact with heart-related medicines (quinidine, amiodarone, sotalol, dofetilide, digoxin), gastroprokinetic agent (cisapride), antimanic drug (lithium), antibiotics (erythromycin, moxifloxacin), tricyclic antidepressants, other antipsychotics, blood thinner (warfarin), medicines that make you feel drowsy, antiemetic (metoclopramide), antiparkinson drug (levodopa), appetite suppressant (sibutramine), antidiabetics, anticonvulsants, steroid (prednisolone), high blood pressure lowering medicines (hydralazine, doxazosin, guanethidine, methyldopa, clonidine) and hormone (epinephrine).

Drug-Food Interaction: Spenzo Depot 20 Injection 1 ml may interact with alcohol. Therefore, avoid intake of alcohol while taking Spenzo Depot 20 Injection 1 ml as it may increase drowsiness.

Drug-Disease Interaction: If you have fits, asthma, bronchitis, serious blood circulation problems, potassium or magnesium in the blood, enlarged prostate, phaeochromocytoma (tumor in the adrenal gland), glaucoma (increased pressure in the eye), high blood pressure, Parkinson’s disease, diabetes, blood clots, cancer, myasthenia gravis (muscle weakness), have a family history of irregular heartbeats or blood clots, liver, kidney, heart or thyroid problems, inform your doctor before taking Spenzo Depot 20 Injection 1 ml.

• Maintain a diet rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains. 
• Follow a regular sleep pattern. Do not take a nap during day time. 
• Avoid watching tv, using mobiles or laptops just before bedtime.
• Avoid consumption of alcohol as it may increase drowsiness.

Certain blood tests are recommended while taking Spenzo Depot 20 Injection 1 ml to monitor the level of Spenzo Depot 20 Injection 1 ml in blood if you have liver problems.
