Physicuf-D Syrup belongs to the class of medications called ‘expectorants’ used to treat cough. Cough is a common reflex action to clear foreign particles, mucus or irritants present in the airway. Physicuf-D Syrup also treats symptoms such as runny nose, throat or airway irritation, sinus pressure or congestion, watery, or itchy eyes and sneezing associated with upper respiratory tract infections.
Physicuf-D Syrup is a combination of six medicines: Chlorpheniramine, Dextromethorphan, Guaifenesin, Sodium citrate, Menthol, and Ammonium chloride. Chlorpheniramine is an antihistamine and works by blocking histamine, a substance responsible for causing allergic reactions. Dextromethorphan acts as a cough suppressant by blocking nerve signals transmitted from the cough centre in the brain. Guaifenesin and ammonium chloride work by helping in the removal of mucus (phlegm) from the airways . Sodium citrate is a 'mucolytic agent' that makes sputum less viscous and easier to cough out. Menthol is an organic compound that produces a cooling sensation and relieves throat irritation. Thus, together Physicuf-D Syrup helps to relieve overall cough, cold and allergic symptoms.
You should take this medicine as prescribed by your doctor. However, Physicuf-D Syrup is usually prescribed for short-term use (not more than 7 days). The common side-effects of Physicuf-D Syrup are dry mouth, nausea, stomach upset, vomiting, drowsiness, headache, blurred vision, constipation, dizziness and restlessness. These side-effects usually do not require any medical attention. However, consult a doctor immediately if any of these side-effects persist or worsen.
Do not take Physicuf-D Syrup if you are allergic to any contents of it. Physicuf-D Syrup is not recommended for treating the chronic cough associated with smoking, or lung problems such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or emphysema. It is also used with caution in patients diagnosed with high blood pressure, epilepsy (fits), glaucoma (a condition caused by increased pressure inside the eye), urination problems and phenylketonuria (a congenital disability resulting in accumulation of phenylalanine (amino acid) in the body). Please do not take this medication with alcohol or sedatives, hypnotics or tranquillizers as it increases the risk of side-effects. It is also not recommended for use in children below 2 years of age. It is also used with caution in pregnant and breastfeeding women.

Cough: Coughing is a reflex action or body’s way of clearing irritants (like allergens, mucus, or smoke) from airways and preventing infection. Coughs may be dry or productive. A productive cough (wet cough) brings up sputum (phlegm, mucus and other matter) from the lungs. Cough is commonly caused as a response to allergy or viral infection but coughing up mucus is possibly an indication of infection in the respiratory tract. If you are coughing thick, solid white mucus, it indicates you may have a bacterial infection in the airways. If the mucus is clear or light-coloured, it indicates you may have allergies or minor infection in the respiratory tract, and yellow or green mucus indicates a respiratory infection.
