About Metridon Syrup

Metridon Syrup belongs to a class of medicines known as antibiotics. This is used to treat various infections caused by bacteria, dysentery and diarrhea. A bacterial infection is a condition in which harmful bacteria enter, multiply and infect our bodies. It can target any body part and multiple very quickly. Amoebic dysentery can be caused due to entamoeba histolytica, giardia lamblia or clostridium difficile. Diarrhea is the increase in bowel movement leading to increased and loose motions.

Metridon Syrup is a combination of two antibiotics that include furazolidone and metronidazole. Metridon Syrup contains flurazolidone works by interfering with the protein synthesis, a mechanism which is important for survival of bacteria. Metronidazole kills parasites and anaerobic bacteria that are responsible for causing infections. It works by damaging their DNA. Collectively they help in treating the disease effectively.

Take Metridon Syrup as prescribed by your doctor. Your doctor will recommend how often you take Metridon Syrup based on your medical condition. Some people may experience nausea, dryness in the mouth, headache, metallic taste, and dark yellow to brown discoloration of urine. If you are allergic to furazolidone, metronidazole or any other antibacterial or anti amoebic agents, please inform your doctor to avoid any unwanted side-effects. Metridon Syrup should not be taken in the conditions like liver disease, kidney disease. Before taking Metridon Syrup inform your doctor if you have fits disorder, numbness or pain of feet or hands. Metridon Syrup may low white blood cell count (leukopenia). Metridon Syrup may cause convulsions (rapid contraction and relaxation of body muscles), if you observe these symptoms immediately contact your doctor. Discontinue the Metridon Syrup if any signs of low blood count observed. Immediately inform your doctor if you experience swelling of the face, tongue, throat, itchy rash or breathing difficulties while taking this Metridon Syrup. Metridon Syrup is safely given to children above one month year of age. Drug Interactions

Drug-Drug Interaction: This medicine may have an interaction with antiparkinson’s medicine (selegiline, rasagiline, apomorphine), a medicine used in cough (dextromethorphan), antiallergic (phenylephrine, pseudoephedrine), medicine for the fit disorder (phenobarbital), medicine for enlarged prostate gland (a gland between the bladder and penis) (alfuzosin), medicine for heart disease (amiodarone), antibiotic (clarithromycin), antacid (omeprazole).

Drug-Food Interaction: Metridon Syrup interacts with foods with high tyramine. Avoid drinking alcohol as it may lead to an unpleasant reaction with symptoms like stomach pain, vomiting, nausea, flushing, headache or redness of the face.

Drug-Disease Interaction: Metridon Syrup may interact in patients with liver disease and gastrointestinal disease.

  • Do not drink or eat a lot of caffeine-containing products such as coffee, tea, energy drinks, cola or chocolate. Metridon Syrup may increase nervousness, sleeplessness and anxiety caused by caffeine.
  • Probiotics should be taken after taking the full course of Metridon Syrup in order to restore some healthy bacteria in the intestines that may have been killed. Taking probiotics after antibiotic treatment can reduce the risk of antibiotic-associated diarrhea. Certain fermented foods like yogurt, cheese, sauerkraut, kombucha and kimchi can help restore the intestine's good bacteria. 
  • Include more fiber-enriched food in your diet, as it can be easily digested by your gut bacteria, which helps stimulate their growth. Thus, fiber-rich foods may help restore healthy gut bacteria after a course of antibiotics. Whole grains like whole-grain bread, brown rice should be included in your diet. Make sure you drink plenty of water or other fluids every day while you are taking Metridon Syrup.
  • Avoid intake of alcoholic beverages with Metridon Syrup as it can make you dehydrated and may affect your sleep. This can make it harder for your body to aid the Metridon Syrup in fighting off infections.

You should consult a doctor if you have symptoms associated with dehydration like dry mouth, excessive thirst, wrinkled skin, little or no urination, dizziness and lightheadedness.
