Duokof DX Sugar Free Syrup 100 ml belongs to a class of medications called ‘expectorants’ primarily used to treat dry cough. Additionally, Duokof DX Sugar Free Syrup 100 ml also treats allergy symptoms such as sneezing, runny nose, throat irritation or watery eyes. Coughing (dry or productive) is a body’s way of clearing irritants (like allergens, mucus or smoke) from airways and preventing infection. There are two types of coughs, namely: Dry cough and chesty cough. A dry cough is tickly and doesn't produce any vicious or thick mucus, while a chesty cough (wet cough) means mucous or sputum is produced to help clear your airways. 

Duokof DX Sugar Free Syrup 100 ml is a combination of four drugs, namely: Guaifenesin (expectorant), Dextromethorphan (cough suppressant), Phenylephrine (decongestant) and Chlorpheniramine (antihistamine). Guaifenesin belongs to the class of expectorants that increase the volume of fluid in the airways, reduce the stickiness of mucus, and remove it from the airways. Dextromethorphan is a cough suppressant that works by blocking the transmission of nerve signals from the cough centre in the brain to the muscles that produce cough. Thus, it decreases the need to cough. Phenylephrine is a decongestant that works by contracting and narrowing the blood vessels. Chlorpheniramine belongs to the class of antihistamines (anti-allergic drugs) that works by blocking the action of histamine, a substance responsible for causing allergic reactions.

Drug-Drug Interaction: Duokof DX Sugar Free Syrup 100 ml may have interaction with anti-allergic drugs (diphenhydramine, cetirizine), antidepressants (duloxetine, sertraline, escitalopram), narcotic analgesics (hydrocodone, codeine), antianxiety drug (alprazolam), central nervous system stimulants (methylphenidate), antipsychotics  (quetiapine), medicines used to treat irregular heartbeats  (quinidine), anticonvulsants (pregabalin), a central nervous system stimulant (amphetamine).

Drug-Food Interaction: Avoid or limit the intake of chocolate and caffeine-containing foods such as cocoa beans and tea leaves with Duokof DX Sugar Free Syrup 100 ml as they may increase the risk of severity of side effects. Also, avoid consumption of alcohol with Duokof DX Sugar Free Syrup 100 ml as it may increase the risk of adverse effects such as drowsiness, dizziness, or difficulty in concentrating.

• Avoid dairy products such as milk as they may increase mucus production. Also, avoid processed or refined foods to have relief from cough. Instead replace baked foods, fried foods, white bread, white pasta, French fries, sugary desserts and chips with green leafy vegetables.
• Drink plenty of fluids to avoid dry throat while you have a cough and loosen mucus.
• Avoid citrus fruits as they may worsen the cough. Eat fruits rich in water content such as pears, watermelon, peaches and pineapples.

• You are recommended to inform your doctor that you are taking Duokof DX Sugar Free Syrup 100 ml before undergoing any medical tests or surgery.
• Drink plenty of fluids while taking Duokof DX Sugar Free Syrup 100 ml to loosen the congestion of nasal passage and airways. If you are a kidney patient, ask a doctor before taking fluid.
